A seven-time letterwinner for Tiger cross country (1947-48-49) and track and field (1947-48-49-50) teams, Madden helped lead MU to a period of dominance from 1947 to 1950. He ran for legendary Coach Tom Botts and was part of five teams that won conference championships (outdoor track: 1947-48-49, indoor track: 1947-48). He was captain of the cross country team in 1949. The St. Louisan continued to contribute to the betterment of Missouri Athletics in a number of ways following his athletic career, often serving as master of ceremonies at recruiting banquets for the football, basketball and track teams. As a toastmaster, he was beyond compare, and presided over many special events in the Columbia area for many years. Madden directed the MU Alumni Association from 1955-71. He served as the head starter and meet announcer at Missouri track meets, and at the Missouri high school championships for many years. He was vice president for communications at MFA/Shelter Insurance Company which sponsored Missouri football and basketball radio broadcasts.
