The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native was a standout tackle at Missouri and in the NFL. He lettered at Mizzou in 1964-65 and won all-Big Eight Conference and all-America plaudits as a senior when Missouri ranked third in the nation in rushing offense and won the Sugar Bowl over Florida and Heisman Trophy QB Steve Spurrier. He was the Big Eight’s “lineman of the week” following MU’s 17-6 win over Minnesota that season. He was a first-round choice of the New York Giants in the 1966 NFL Draft and played for the Green Bay Packers (1968-72) and Kansas City Chiefs (1973-75). He got into coaching working for his college coach, Dan Devine, at Notre Dame in 1977-78. He moved on to the University of California, and then became an assistant coach at Northwestern University in 1981. He became the Wildcats’ head coach in 1985 and held that post through the 1991 season, when he was succeeded by another Mizzou product, Gary Barnett. Peay wrapped up his coaching career with the Indianapolis Colts (1992-93). He was named to Missouri’s all-century team in 1990.
