Coached by John “Hi” Simmons, the 1954 Tigers posted a 22-4 record, won the Big Seven Conference championship, and came back through the losers bracket to win the national title at the College World Series, 4-1 over Rollins College. After opening the CWS with a 5-3 victory over Lafayette, they dropped a 4-1 decision to Rollins. The Tigers then reeled off wins over Massachusetts (8-1), Oklahoma State (7-3) and Michigan State (4-3) to set up the re-match with Rollins. OF Jerry Schoonmaker was a 1954 all-American. The ‘54 Tigers were one of six Mizzou teams that Simmons took to Omaha for the CWS.
