Buckley claws back in St. Petersburg, Florida, from four strokes back to win in playoff
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Senior Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.) has extended his already high-caliber final collegiate season into the amateur ranks, winning the New Year's Invitational for the second-straight year on Sunday at the St. Petersburg Country Club (Jan. 4-7).
Buckley fired a final round of 68 to force a playoff after trailing by four strokes and claimed the event's top honors with a birdie on the first playoff hole. The Tiger went 75-71-72-68 across the four-round tournament.
The prestigious New Year's Invitational has established a tradition of gathering outstanding players from around the world. Past participants include professionals Brandt Snedeker, Bryce Ledford, Gary Koch and Len Mattiace.
Buckley and the Tigers will continue their 2017-18 season at the SunTrust Gator Invitational from Feb. 17-18, in Gainesville, Florida.
