Challenge Four Tigers record Top-10 Program Marks on final day of competition in New York City
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Track & Field senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) continued her impressive senior campaign Saturday at the Columbia Challenge in New York City, N.Y. Running in one of the world's most famous indoor track venues, the Armory, Schweizer finished third overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the mile run invitational, clocking a time of 4:27.54.
Schweizer was one of four Tigers to record top-10 program marks on the day, as junior Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Wis.) posted a top-10 mark in the high jump, while redshirt sophomore CeCe Johnson (St. Louis, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore Becky Keating (Reading England) posted top-10 marks in the weight throw.
NOTABLE FINISHES
Schweizer's mile time of 4:27.54 is the fastest collegiate time recorded this season, and the fourth-fastest time overall in NCAA history. The Tiger senior obliterated the Mizzou school record in the race, surpassing Laura Roxberg's 2013 time of 4:34.59. Schweizer now owns the top mile run and the top 5000m run time this season, after crossing the finish line at 15:17.31 at the BU Season Opener (Dec. 2).
Roman matched the ninth-best high jump in program history with a mark of 1.77m (5-9.75) to finish sixth. The jump was Roman's personal record mark and, is a 2.75 inch improvement from her previous best jump of 1.70m (5-7) entering this season.
In the women's weight throw, the duo of Johnson and Keating finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Johnson's toss of 18.88m (61-11.5) ranks sixth all-time in program history, while Keating's mark of 18.50m (60-8.5) ranks ninth.
Other notable finishes on the track for Mizzou included redshirt senior Jerrad Mason (Bridgetown, Barbados), who posted a season-best time of 48.01 to finish fourth in the 400m dash, and redshirt senior Megan Cunningham (Eureka, Mo.), who finished eighth in the 3000m run at 9:19.28.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Brett Halter
"Obviously, Karissa stole the show today with another well executed race. Certainly a congratulations to her and Coach Burns. I thought we had terrific showings from our weight throwers today with many setting new personal bests. I thought Megan (Cunningham) ran another gutsy race in the 3000 meter run. And, I know we are excited about the adjustments Karissa Roman has made in the high jump and those efforts are beginning to shine. Overall, we knew heading into New York that this meet and setting would challenge us in many ways. I thought, overall, the team's competitive integrity is improving as we now set our sights on moving toward championship season."
UP NEXT
Mizzou will next travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational, Feb. 9-10. The meet will be the penultimate meet for Mizzou in the regular season before starting postseason competition at the SEC Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25, in College Station, Texas.
