Mizzou Cross Country Opens Season with Eight Top-10 Finishes at JK Gold Classic

Kleve paces the Mizzou women with a fourth place finish, Dubrick finishes sixth to pace the men

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Cross Country team began its 2017 campaign at the JK Gold Classic on Saturday in Wichita, Kan. Mizzou recorded eight top-10 finishes on the day, led by redshirt sophomore Jordyn Kleve's (Urbandale, Iowa) fourth place finish in the women's 4k race.

NOTABLE FINISHES

Redshirt senior Marc Dubrick (DeKalb, Ill.) paced Mizzou on the men's side, finishing the 6k race sixth with a time of 18:49.1. Dubrick was the first of four Tigers to finish consecutively, as redshirt sophomore Thomas George (Gloucester, England), redshirt sophomore Michael Widmann (Naperville, Ill.) and redshirt freshman Justin Loquercio (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. In all, nine Tigers made their Mizzou debuts in the race, led by Loquercio's ninth-place finish.

On the women's side, Kleve led the way with her fourth-place finish, crossing the finish line with a time of 14:09.2 in the 4k race. Finishing in the top-10 behind Kleve was redshirt senior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.), redshirt senior Megan Cunningham (Eureka, Mo.) and freshman Jenna Lutzow (Belvidere, Ill.), who finished fifth, sixth and eighth, respectively. Lutzow led the way for 10 Tigers who made their Mizzou debuts on the women's side, finishing the race with a time of 14:25.7.

"The JK Gold Classic was a great start to our season," said Burns. "Both teams executed the game plan well. They stayed together in their groups through the first half of the race, then did a nice job competing over the last half. On the men's side, we are really excited about the jump Justin Loquercio has made. He has put himself in position to help us get better. Marc Dubrick looked strong leading the way for us and Thomas George looked great throughout the race. The first three women ran very controlled and it was a good sign to see them stick together the whole way. Jenna Lutzow finished strong and blew by a big pack down the stretch. We have some good depth on the women's team and that is encouraging moving forward."

UP NEXT

Mizzou will next be in competition on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn. It will mark the second of five regular season meets for Mizzou before starting postseason competition on Oct. 27, in Athens, Ga., for the SEC Championships.
