37 runners are scheduled to race for Mizzou, including 20 who will make their debut
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Cross Country will begin its 2017 campaign on Saturday, as the team will head west to Wichita, Kan., for the JK Gold Invitational. The men will toe the start line first in a 6000m race at 8:30 a.m. (CT), followed by a women's 4000m race at 9 a.m. (CT).
The races will be the second and third races of the meet, as four other high school races will also take place at the Raft Golf Course. In total, 37 runners are scheduled to run for Mizzou, 16 on the men's side and 21 for the women. Of the 37 racers, 20 will be making their collegiate or Mizzou debut.
The women's team will be looking to build off a historic 2016 season which saw them record their highest finish a decade at the conference meet, NCAA regional meet and NCAA meet. The defending NCAA Midwest Regional Champions return five runners from a year ago, including redshirt sophomore Jordyn Kleve (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt senior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.), who are both scheduled to run on Saturday.
The men's team will also feature five returning runners who scored for Mizzou at last year's NCAA Midwest Regional meet, including redshirt sophomore Michael Widmann (Naperville, Ill.), who earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors in 2016. Freshman Austin Hindman (Wildwood, Mo.), who won the 2016 Junior World Triathlon, is scheduled to make his Tiger debut in the race.
Saturday's race will be the first of five meets for Mizzou before entering postseason competition. The Tigers will head south to Athens, Ga., for the SEC Championships on Oct. 27, north to Ames, Iowa, for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 10, and east to Louisville, Ky., for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18.
