Mizzou returns All-Americans Schweizer and Kempfer for 2017 campaign
NEW ORLEANS – The Mizzou Women's Cross Country team will begin the 2017 season ranked No. 15 in the NCAA DI National Coaches' Poll, announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.
In addition to its national top-15 ranking, the women's team will start the year ranked atop the NCAA Midwest Regional, announced in the NCAA DI Region Rankings by the USTFCCCA on Monday.
Last season, Mizzou finished 16th at the NCAA Championships, fueled behind All-America finishes from senior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) and senior Jamie Kempfer (Festus, Mo.).
The 2016 season was historic in many ways for the Mizzou women as the team recorded its highest conference finish (third) at the SEC Championships, captured its first regional title since 2004 at the NCAA Midwest Regional and qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2004. Individually, Schweizer captured the first cross country National Title in program history, the first individual regional title since 2003 and the first individual conference title since 1997. Schweizer and Kempfer's All-America performances marked the first time since 1984 that Mizzou had two runner finish with All-America status.
Mizzou will begin the season at the JK Gold Invitational in Wichita, Kan., on Saturday, Sept. 2, and hopefully will finish the season at the NCAA Championships, which will be held Nov. 18, in Louisville, Ky.
