Junior QB is the SEC’s top returning passer from a season ago
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Football junior QB Drew Lock (Lee's Summit, Mo.) has been named to the Manning Award Preseason Watch List, announced Wednesday by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The Manning Award list includes 30 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2017 season. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowl season. This is the first time Lock has been named to the list.
After leading the SEC in total passing yards and ranking second in passing yards per game and yards per completion last season, Lock looks to step into elite status in 2017. Lock put up 3,399 passing yards a year ago, ranking 10th nationally and fifth in school history while his 23 passing TDs were the sixth-most in program history. His 4,731 career passing yards already rank as the eighth-most in program history through two years. Lock quarterbacked the only offense in the SEC to average more than 500 yards of total offense per game last year and has more career starts than any returning SEC quarterback.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
Inclusion on the Watch List is not necessary for the quarterbacks to be selected for the honor. Midseason additions to the Watch List will be announced on Thursday, October 12. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Thursday, November 30. The winner will be announced in the week following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
This year's Watch List includes players from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences.
