12 from Mizzou earn All-Academic Individual Recognition
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Track & Field program was well represented in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic Awards, announced by the organization on Thursday and Friday. Junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) was named the NCAA D-I Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year, while the men's and women's program's both earned the All-Academic team honor and 12 student-athletes were named All-Academic Individuals.
The All-Academic team award is given to programs with at least a 3.00 cumulative team grade-point-average (GPA). Both men's and women's program's earned the highest GPA of all SEC teams, with the men checking in at 3.27 and the women at 3.49. Since the award's inception in 1995-96, the women's team has received the award every season.
In order to be named an All-Academic Individual, a student-athlete must have a 3.25 cumulative GPA requirement and either be ranked nationally at the end of the indoor season or have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships for the outdoor season.
Schweizer, who maintains a 3.373 GPA in Health Sciences, earned All-Academic Individual honors for the third consecutive season and became the first Mizzou student-athlete to be honored as a Track Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was also named the USTFCCCA Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year in February. On the track, Schweizer captured national titles in the indoor 5000m run and outdoor 5000m run, becoming the fourth female in NCAA history to complete the distance triple crown (cross country, indoor 5000m and outdoor 5000m national titles).
In total, 12 student-athletes were named to the All-Academic Individual list, including five for the second time. Senior Ollie Lockley (Colby, Isle of Man), senior Luca Russo (Kent, England), senior Sandrae Farquharson (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica), redshirt sophomore Jamie Kempfer (Festus, Mo.) and senior Valerie Thames (Milwaukee, Wis.) all earned the honor for the second consecutive year.
In June, 52 student-athletes from the Mizzou Track & Field team were placed on the 2017 Spring SEC Honor Roll and six were named to the First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll.
