Junior Punter is Among 29 Standouts Named to Pre-Season Watch List
COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri junior punter Corey Fatony (Franklin, Tenn.) was selected today as one of 29 pre-season candidates for the 2017 Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation's top collegiate punter.
Fatony is set to enter his third year as Mizzou's punter in 2017, and the junior has already established himself as one of the SEC's best. A year ago, Fatony ranked 20th in the NCAA (5th in the SEC) with his per-punt average of 43.8 (66 punts, 2,894 yards in 12 games). He was masterful in 2016 at changing field position and keeping opposing offenses pinned deep in their own territory, as his 25 punts downed inside the 20 yardline was the fifth-most by a Tiger in MU single-season history. He won freshman all-American honors in 2015 when he averaged 42.9 yards on an MU-record 81 punts.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Ga., native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
