Wednesday’s honor marks the first-ever SEC preseason recognition for each Tiger
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mizzou Volleyball redshirt senior Melanie Crow (Wildwood, Mo.) and junior Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) were named to the 2017 Preseason Volleyball All-Southeastern Conference Team, announced Wednesday by the league office.
It marks the first career preseason All-SEC recognition for both Crow and Munlyn. The Tiger duo played a pivotal into Mizzou's 2016 SEC Championship, as each earned All-SEC honors following the season.
"It's a great honor for both Mel and Alyssa," Mizzou Volleyball head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "They have both worked very hard and it's great to see that the other coaches in the league recognized their efforts. I believe we have other team members worthy of such recognition as well, but with only 10 slots available, it's tough."
"I believe that 2017 is going to be a great year for the SEC. We have a number of excellent teams and there's not much difference between the teams at the top of the preseason rankings and the rest. There's a lot of parity and it will be a challenge for us, but our players have been working very hard this offseason in anticipation of this challenge. Everyone is looking forward to the upcoming season!"
This year's SEC Volleyball Preseason Coaches' Poll was also announced Wednesday morning with Mizzou tallying 121 total votes and a third-place predicted finish. For the complete 2017 Preseason SEC Volleyball release, visit SECSports.com.
In her first campaign in Columbia, Mo., Crow was sensational for the Tigers, earning 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association Third Team All-America honors. She became the 12th individual in Mizzou Volleyball history to claim All-America accolades.
Crow reset single-season career highs in kills (445), attacks (1,105), hitting percentage (.254), aces (48), aces per set (0.43), digs (239), solo blocks (21) and points (532.0). Following her stellar season, she also garnered her first-ever AVCA Southeast All-Region recognition.
Munlyn, a two-time AVCA All-American, was lights out yet again at middle blocker in 2016. After a historical first-year campaign in 2015, she continued to break school records in her second season at Mizzou. Munlyn produced a school record 153 total blocks last year, passing the previous all-time mark of 149 she originally set in 2015.
Her .424 hitting percentage (second), 117 block assists (third), 36 solo blocks (fourth) and 1.25 blocks per set (fifth) all ranked top 5 in single-season totals in Mizzou Volleyball history. Munlyn was named AVCA Southeast All-Region for the second consecutive year following her fantastic sophomore campaign.
