SEC honors Walker, as well as Franssen and Buckley, with announcement of postseason awards
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior Euan Walker (Troon, Scotland) became the fifth Southeastern Conference golfer ever to repeat as the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Walker has been a standout for Mizzou Men's Golf head coach Mark Leroux's squad throughout his final campaign as a Tiger. His 71.4 stroke average is tied for second-best for the Black & Gold, and he has also finished as Mizzou's low golfer at four different events this season. In the classroom, Walker has maintained an outstanding 4.0 cumulative grade point average while majoring in mathematics.
Two Mizzou golfers have earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition three times since the program joined the conference for the 2012-13 season. Former Mizzou standout Hunter Kraus earned the award following the Tigers' inaugural campaign in the league.
In addition to Walker's prestigious honor, freshman Rory Franssen (Inverness, Scotland) was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. Franssen became the first All-Freshman honoree for the Tigers since his teammate Walker brought home the honor after the 2013-14 season. Franssen currently tops the Tigers' squad in terms of GoltStat.com ranking, coming in at 92nd nationally.
Additionally, junior Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.) was recognized to the league's Community Service Team for the second season in a row. Along with volunteering for the Columbia Public Schools Lunch Buddy program and the Caleb's Pitch initiative at MU Children's Hospital, Buckley has served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) representative going on three years. He also volunteers as SAAC's Community Service chairman.
