Mizzou’s Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity will host a rallying cry for the Mizzou campus and community
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Athletics has partnered with the University of Missouri's Division of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity to encourage the Mizzou and local Mid-Missouri communities to participate in the 'Principles of Community' Mile Run on Saturday, May 6, from Noon-2 p.m. The purpose of this event is to serve as a rallying cry for the entire Mizzou campus and local community.
The "Principles of Community" are aspirational statements that embody Mizzou's commitment to a climate of civility, sensitivity and mutual respect. The Mizzou Mile serves as an entry point to greater dialogue and discussions between the many different student organizations, faculty, staff and local affiliations.
"The Division of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity is delighted to collaborate with the Division of Athletics on the Principles of Community Mizzou Mile run," said Kevin McDonald, MU's Interim Vice Chancellor for Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity. "Their collaborative spirit and the enthusiasm of our students, faculty, staff, and local community members regarding the importance of this event are both overwhelming and incredibly exciting. I hope this run signifies a recognition that diversity and inclusion are not optional exercises but rather indispensable preconditions that enable us to capitalize on our diverse skills, perspectives and experiences so that we can better advance the fundamental mission of our respective organizations."
The Mizzou Mile will take place on campus, beginning at Noon May 6 at Tiger Plaza. Those wishing to participate can register at GetMeRegistered.com/MizzouMile. The race is just $5 for Mizzou students, faculty and staff and $10 for those not affiliated with Mizzou (ages 13+). Children age 12 and under are free. First, second and third-place awards will be handed out to the top finishers in 11 different age groups with the fastest overall male and female times receiving an award as well.
The race will end near Stankowski Field at Mizzou's campus where there will be food, post-race activities including bounce houses, face painting, pictures and music, and presence from Mizzou Athletics and student-athletes across all sports.
The Mizzou Mile will support a variety of charitable organizations in addition to raising awareness of inclusion, civility and mutual respect. Charities benefited will be the United Service Organization (proceeds to military assistance), It's On Us (prevention of sexual violence), Rally4Rhyan (pediatric cancer) and Circle of Sisterhood (removing barriers to education).
Anyone participating in the Mizzou Mile will also receive a discounted ticket for Mizzou Softball's May 6 game vs. nationally-ranked Ole Miss at 2 p.m. at the brand new Mizzou Softball Stadium.
