Santos has earned the honor in back-to-back campaigns
COLUMBIA, MO. – Mizzou Tennis senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) was named Second Team All-SEC, announced by the league office on Thursday. It is the second consecutive season that Santos has earned the honor.
"Being named to the All-SEC second team is a great honor for Bea," head coach Colt Gaston said. "Our conference is one of the strongest in college tennis and for her to be All-SEC back-to-back years is not easy. She has dedicated so much to this program and this award is well deserved."
Santos racked up 33 total wins during the 2016-17 season, including a team-best 21 doubles victories. The senior leader anchored the Tigers' No. 1 singles spot and flourished for the second consecutive campaign in that position. Santos is ranked No. 77 in the latest ITA National Singles Rankings, her highest ranking of the spring.
She downed four opponents who are ranked in the latest poll, all coming in SEC play. Santos most recently toppled No. 14 Erin Routliffe of Alabama in straight sets to help Mizzou beat the then-No. 33 Crimson Tide, 4-3.
Santos and her partner Amina Ismail have dominated doubles play as Mizzou's No. 1 duo. The pairing is ranked No. 13 in the nation, the highest ranked Tiger duo since 2003. Ismail and Santos have seven wins over pairings currently ranked in the nation's Top 65, including Florida's ninth-ranked duo and Kentucky's fourth-ranked duo.
Santos and her partner have just three losses since Jan. 30, winning six of its final seven matches down the stretch. The duo is 12-5 together and 6-3 in SEC play, putting them in good position to clinch a berth in the NCAA Doubles Tournament. The field is selected May 3.
