BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Missouri seniors Sean Culkin (Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.) and Lauren Reedy (Rochester Hills, Mich.) are nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award, as announced by the Southeastern Conference on Thursday. One male and one female from each of the SEC's 14 institutions were nominated for the scholarship, and the overall recipients of the award will be announced on April 27.
Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship. The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla., in early June.
A four-year letter winner for the Mizzou football team, Culkin made 32 total starts and finished his Tiger career with 61 catches for 601 yards and two touchdowns. He recorded career-bests in catches (24), yards (282) and yards per catch (11.8) in 2016, when he served as a team captain. Following his senior season, Culkin was selected to play in the Tropics Bowl.
A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, Culkin received his bachelor's degree in education in May of 2016. He also serves as a leader in the Columbia community, volunteering with the local Boys/Girls Club, University Hospital, Race for the Cure, Mizzou Moves, Special Olympics and Central Missouri Food Bank, among others. He also had an internship in the financial industry this past year.
Reedy, a member of the Mizzou diving program, graduates in May with a bachelor's degree in nutritional sciences. A nine-time Dean's List selection, she owns a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.91. Reedy earned both SEC Female Diver of the Year and SEC Female Diver of the Meet in 2017 after claiming the conference 1-meter diving title. She is also a three-time All-America honorable mention selection and recently qualified for this summer's 2017 FINA World Championships on mixed synchronized 3-meter.
Out of the pool, Reedy spent more than 18 hours volunteering for Granny's House in the fall of 2016, as well as time in her church nursery.
