Cody wins Most Outstanding Performer, Mizzou men finish third
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Behind first place finishes in seven women's events and five men's events, the Mizzou Track & Field team finished first in the women's standings and third on the men's side on Saturday at the Tom Botts Invitational. The women's team was led by sophomore Maya Cody (St. Louis, Mo.), who was named the female Most Outstanding Performer of the meet following first place finishes in the 200m dash and 4x100m relay, as well as a second place finish in the 100m dash.
The women's team finished atop the team race with 153 points, finishing ahead of Nebraska (125 points) and Northern Iowa (121 points), while the men's team finished with 122 points, coming in behind Nebraska (157 points) and Northern Iowa (141 points). Prior to the final relay event of the meet, Mizzou honored 23 seniors and one team manager for their contribution to the program over the past several years.
"We don't get to compete in front of our home fans very often, so we came out this weekend and took advantage of that," said head coach Brett Halter. "Really cool for Maya to win Outstanding Performer. She's been working hard and today was a product of that dedication to get better."
Cody's banner day began in the 4x100m relay, where she ran the opening leg for Mizzou, who finished first with a time of 45.61, which ranks eighth all-time in program history. The Tiger sophomore then transitioned to individual events, starting with the 100m dash where Cody set a personal record for the second straight meet. After posting an 11.72 at the Crimson Tide Invite on April 8, Cody ran an 11.56 on Saturday to earn the second place finish. Not yet done for the day, Cody returned to the start line for the 200m dash. This time, she came out on top, finishing first with a personal record time of 23.71, improving from her previous best time of 23.99. With the .28 improvement, Cody jumps from sixth to third on the program top-10 list.
As a whole, the Mizzou sprinters performed outstandingly on Saturday, as the Tigers swept all four relay events, as well as both 400m dash races. On the women's 4x100m relay team which posted the eighth-fastest time in program history, Cody was joined by senior LaQuisha Jackson (Chattanooga, Tenn.), redshirt sophomore Tsai-Anne Joseph (St. Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago) and senior Sandrae Farquharson (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica). In the 400m dash, Jackson finished first on the women's side with a personal record time of 53.50 to move into third in program history, while Montgomery placed first by finishing at 46.86, more than a full second ahead of the runner-up. In the 400m hurdles, Mason posted a personal record time of 51.24, moving up on the all-time leader board from seventh (51.91) to fourth.
In the field events, Mizzou had four first place finishes including a sweep in the javelin from senior Reinhard Van Zyl (Hoedspruit, South Africa) and senior Jennifer Berilla (Ballwin, Mo.). Van Zyl posted a mark 65.31m (214-3) to win the men's event, while Berilla threw 47.73m (136-11) to win the women's event. In the high jump, sophomore Karissa Roman (Kewanee, Ill.) earned a third place finish with a personal record jump of 1.75m (5-8.75).
Mizzou hits the road again for its next competition, traveling south to Fayetteville, Ark., for the John McDonnell Invitational, April 21-22.
