Schweizer sets the outdoor 5K mark, while Kempfer sets the 10K
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Mizzou Track & Field junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) and redshirt sophomore Jamie Kempfer (Festus, Mo.) each set school records on Friday at the Stanford Invitational, as Schweizer set the 5000m mark and Kempfer the 10,000m record. Both competing in marquee invitational heats, Schweizer finished second with a time of 15:39.75, while Kempfer finished eighth with a time of 33:09.67.
Schweizer, who now holds both the indoor and outdoor 5000m school records, surpasses Sabrina Dornhoefer's 1985 mark of 15:42.22. The NCAA Cross Country and Indoor 5K National Champion once again remained consistent to her race strategy, staying near the fourth-sixth position for most of the race before dictating the pace over the final few laps. The Tiger junior led for most of the final three laps before Washington's Amy-Eloise Neale passed her at the very end.
In the long 10,000m race, Kempfer stayed near the front of the pack for the majority of the race before a group of runners separated themselves from the rest as the Tiger sophomore finished the race in eighth place. Kempfer passes teammate senior Kaitlyn Fischer (Pevely, Mo.) to earn the top-spot in program history at 10,000m. Fischer posted a time of 33:12.37 at the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Mizzou's distance runners impressed all around on Friday as nine personal-records and four top-10 times were set between the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
In San Francisco, senior Ollie Lockley (Colby, Isle of Man) and redshirt junior Sheldon Keence (St. Charles, Mo.) joined the female duo by earning spots on the top-10 list. In the 10,000m run, Lockley posted the third-fastest time in school history at 29:24.18, while Keence set the eighth-fastest 3000m steeplechase time at 8:55.29.
In the 5000m run, three Tigers posted personal bests as redshirt senior Drew White (Festus, Mo.) finished at 14:16.81, senior Teylar Adelsberger (O'Fallon, Mo.) finished at 16:36.08 and Megan Cunningham (Eureka, Mo.) at 17:09.88. The San Francisco race was the second of the day for White, who set his PR earlier in the day at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 14:18.13. White entered the race with the intention of "rabbiting" the race, but decided to finish the race after feeling comfortable throughout.
Senior Luca Russo (Kent, England) and redshirt junior Nicole Mello (Columbia, Mo.) each recorded up personal bests at the Stanford Invitational as Russo finished first in his 1500m heat, finishing at 3:46.47, while Mello finished her 5000m race at 16:50.06.
