INDIANAPOLIS – The Men's Mizzou swimming and diving team posted two top four finishes and set four school records during day two action Thursday at the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. The Tigers sit in ninth as a team with 71.5 points after two days of competition.
Senior Michael Chadwick (Charlotte, North Carolina) and the 200 free and 400 medley relays all claimed first team All-America honors on Thursday to lead a strong day in the pool for the Tigers.
"Today was a great day," Mizzou Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh said. "We had very few swims today but we kind of maximized them. Four swims, more than four best times and three top eights. I don't know anyone else who has that percentage, so we're doing pretty well."
Missouri posted a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay, the highest-ever relay finish for the program. Freshman Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Illinois) and seniors Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany), Andrew Sansoucie (Wentzville, Missouri) and Chadwick erupted for a school record 3:01.91 in the final, a three second drop from the record entering the meet. The team's previous best relay finish was fourth in the same event at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Additionally, Hein broke Mizzou's 100 back record with a personal best 45.99 on the first leg of the race.
In the 50 free, Chadwick added to his program-best All-America haul as he tied for fourth in the 50 free. The senior twice broke his own school record on the day, first with an 18.99 in prelims, then a 18.97 in finals to earn the fourth-place spot and match his 2016 finish in the event.
The Tigers also notched first team All-America honors in the 200 free relay for the third consecutive season. Mizzou's relay of Chadwick, Sansoucie, sophomore Luke Mankus (Keller, Texas) and Sam Coffman (Centennial, Colorado) tied the school record they set in prelims to tie for seventh in 1:16.78. Sophomore Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) swam on the relay in prelims to also claim All-America honors.
Day three action at the 2017 Championships continues on Friday, March 24 with swimming prelims at 10 a.m. ET, diving prelims at 12:15 p.m. ET and finals at 6 p.m. ET.
