Schweizer officially added to the list following NCAA Indoor 5K National Championship
NEW ORLEANS – Following her second National Championship, junior Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) was named to the Bowerman Women's Watch List, announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday. The Tiger junior added two All-America honors to her resume at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships (March 10-11), finishing first at the 5,000m run and second in the 3,000m run.
Schweizer, who first received votes towards the watch list for collegiate track & field's most prestigious award in January, was officially added to the list following her performance at the NCAA Indoor meet. With her national title in the indoor 5K, Schweizer became the first female student-athlete in Mizzou Athletics history and fifth overall to win two NCAA titles. Schweizer captured the 2016 NCAA Cross Country National Championship in November.
The Urbandale, Iowa native reset her own 5,000m run indoor school record by winning the 5K indoor national title with a time of 15:19.14, a full 12 seconds ahead of the runner-up. The time was fast enough to rank as the sixth fastest 5,000m run time in indoor collegiate history. Schweizer previously set the school record on Dec. 3, finishing with a time of 15:37.40 at the Boston University Season Opener. The time surpassed Susan Bliss' 1990 mark of 16:33.30.
The next day, Schweizer recorded her fourth career All-America honor by finishing second in the 3,000m run, recording a time of 9:09.33. With 18 points, Schweizer tied Oregon's Hannah Cunliffe as the top female scorer at the meet, and vaulted the Tigers to an eighth place finish, the third NCAA top-10 finish in program history.
Mizzou will transition to the outdoor portion of its 2017 schedule, with distance runners competing in the Stanford Invitational March 30-April 1, while the rest of the team heads to the Texas Relays, set for March 30-April 2.
