Mizzou’s Overall GSR Score Is School-Record & Ranks Third In SEC
COLUMBIA, Mo. – With a school-record Graduation Success Rate (GSR) score of 91, University of Missouri student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom as well as competition, according to the most-recent data compiled by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. All-told, six Mizzou teams registered Southeastern Conference-leading GSR scores in their respective sports, and five other programs ranked among the league's top three in their respective sport.
"The University of Missouri's strong academic performance is a credit to the classroom commitment of our student-athletes, leadership by our coaches and tremendous work by our Mizzou Made academic services and student-athlete development staffs," said University of Missouri Director of Athletics Jim Sterk. "We are also grateful to Mizzou's world-class faculty members who play a key role in the academic development of our student-athletes and are to be commended for their outstanding classroom work."
Mizzou's institutional GSR score of 91 ranked third in the SEC behind Vanderbilt (96) and South Carolina (93), but ahead of Alabama (90), LSU (90), Mississippi State (90), Kentucky (85), Tennessee (85), Ole Miss (84), Florida (83), Georgia (83), Auburn (82), Texas A&M (81) and Arkansas (80). Mizzou's most-recent GSR score is a three-point improvement over last year's then-record tying score of 88, and marked the 11th-consecutive year it either improved or matched its previous year score.
Mizzou's SEC-leading GSR scores came in the sports of baseball (97), women's basketball (100), women's golf (100), women's gymnastics (100), women's tennis (100) and volleyball (100). In addition, four programs—football (85), men's swimming and diving (96), men's track & field/cross country (93) and women's track & field/cross country (94) ranked third in the SEC, as did wrestling, which competes in the Mid-American Conference, with a GSR mark of 78.
GSR scores and SEC rank of Mizzou's other programs were: women's swimming and diving (7th/94), women's soccer (8th/95), softball (10th/89), men's golf (10th/80) and men's basketball (11th/73).
The NCAA also released its annual student-athlete Federal Graduation Rates survey, and Mizzou's 72 percent rate for its student-athletes was the SEC's second-best mark, behind Vanderbilt's league-leading 86 percent rate, and equaled the highest mark in program history (72 percent in 2014-15). Mizzou's student-athlete graduation rate was three points higher than the University's average for all students during that same time frame.
The GSR was developed by the NCAA with the entering freshmen class of 1995 to more accurately assess student-athlete's academic performance. The rate holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
Under the calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing students who leave in good academic standing. The outgoing transfers are included in the receiving institution's GSR cohort. The most recent Division I Graduation Success Rates are based on the four entering classes from 2007-2010.
