Former Mizzou hurler becomes 10th pitcher in MLB history to win the Cy Young three times
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Baseball standout RHP Max Scherzer earned the National League Cy Young Award, announced Wednesday evening by Major League Baseball. Scherzer has now won the award three times and in back-to-back seasons. He won the American League Cy Young in 2013 while pitching in Detroit and has now won the last two National League Cy Young awards while pitching with the Washington Nationals. He is one of just 10 pitchers ever to win three Cy Young awards.
To put his accomplishment into perspective, the list of pitchers with three Cy Young awards is impressive: Roger Clemens (seven), Randy Johnson (five), Steve Carlton (four), Greg Maddux (four) Sandy Koufax (three), Pedro Martinez (three), Jim Palmer (three), Tom Seaver (three) and Clatyon Kershaw (three). All but Clemens and Kershaw (who is still pitching) are in the Hall of Fame.
Scherzer had another banner year while pitching for the NL East champion Nationals. The ace of the staff, he led the NL in strikeouts (268) and WHIP (0.90), was second in ERA (2.51), fourth in wins (16) and win percentage (.727) and seventh in innings (200.2).
