Junior middle blocker currently ranks second in the nation in total blocks
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mizzou Volleyball junior Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) was named Week Six Southeastern Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday (Oct. 2) by the league's office.
The honor marks Munlyn's first weekly award by the SEC office this season. Overall, the Tiger middle blocker has produced eight weekly honors from the conference. Munlyn was recognized as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week twice over her 2016 sophomore campaign.
"I'm very proud of Alyssa," Mizzou Volleyball head coach Wayne Kreklow said. "She has worked very hard on all facets of her game and it's paying off for her and the team. She has been relentless at the net blocking, making the extra effort to close and be involved in every block opportunity. She has also worked very hard in making herself available in transition which really helps our offensive production. It's a well-deserved honor today for Alyssa!"
Mizzou (10-7, 3-1 SEC) claimed two road victories this past weekend, extending its current SEC winning streak to three matches. In triumphs over Auburn and Alabama, Munlyn posted 17 total blocks (2.12 per set) and added on to her impressive 2017 season totals.
She started the weekend with arguably her top overall match this year, tallying a season-high 15 kills on .519 hitting with 12 total blocks at Auburn (Sept. 29). Munlyn's 12 total blocks were tied for the most by an individual in an SEC match this season. It marked her fourth match this year with double-digit total blocks, ranking first in the conference.
Munlyn's standout performance at Auburn also secured her second consecutive double-double with 10-plus kills and total blocks. Against the Tigers, she also recorded her 600th career kill and 400th career total block.
In Mizzou's Sunday (Oct. 1) sweep at Alabama, Munlyn was efficient yet again over three sets with seven kills on .667 hitting and five total blocks.
Through Mizzou's 17 matches played this season, Munlyn currently paces the SEC with 109 total blocks and 94 block assists. She also places second with 15 solo blocks and 1.60 blocks per set. In SEC only action, Munlyn leads the conference with 1.94 blocks per set, 27 block assists and 31 total blocks.
Nationally, Munlyn ranks second in the NCAA with 109 total blocks and sixth in the country with 1.60 blocks per set. Offensively, her outstanding .373 hitting percentage ranks Top-60 in the nation.
