Tigers look to light up the links at the Blackthorn Club
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Men's Golf continues on the road, taking to the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tennessee, to participate in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate (Oct. 13-15), its third event of the season. Despite placing sixth at the Jackrabbit Invitational, head coach Mark Leroux's Tigers are currently ranked as the nation's seventh-best men's squad, according to Golfweek rankings.
The field at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate is comprised of several teams ranked in Golfweek's Top-25, including No. 11 Tennessee, No. 17 Kent State, and No. 24 Kansas. The rest of the field is filled out by Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Furman, Louisville, Penn State, UNCW, VCU, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Virginia and host ETSU. For the second-straight event, Mizzou will enter as the highest ranked squad.
Senior Hayden Buckley (Belden, Miss.) leads the Tigers into the event, and he has started his final campaign at a fast pace. He won the Turning Stone Intercollegiate with a 7-under-par showing, and then took 28th at the Jackrabbit, courtesy of his 3-under-par finish. Buckley has already put up four rounds-under-par and two events-under-par.
Following Buckley in the traveling lineup for the Black & Gold is freshman Jamie Stewart (Renfrewshire, Scotland). The Tiger newcomer's rise to the second traveling slot comes on the heels of an impressive showing at the Jackrabbit, as Stewart fired a 213, good enough for a 28th-place tie with Buckley. Stewart has been a model of consistency for Leroux so far, as he has not yet carded a single round over 74 this season.
Junior Matt Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.) remains in the third slot, and is coming off the best tournament performance of his career. Echelmeier led the team at the Jackrabbit, recording a 7-under-par (72-69-68—209), which was his best round ever by four strokes. The junior also set his new career-low for a single round, shooting a 68 in the third round, when the Black & Gold certainly needed a spark.
In the fourth slot is freshman Jack Parker (Columbia, Mo.), who has played solid golf in his first two college events. Parker has remained consistent, playing three of his six first collegiate rounds under par. Sophomore Rory Franssen (Inverness, Scotland) rounds out Leroux's lineup in the fifth spot.
