Mizzou Cross Country Begins 2016 Season at Hawkeye Invitational

15 runners slated to run in Iowa City
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Cross Country team will kick off its 2016 campaign on Friday as they travel to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Hawkeye Invitational. Mizzou will join host-school Iowa along with Iowa State, Illinois (M), Drake, Northern Iowa, Creighton and Bradley at the Ashton Cross Country Course.
The women's 3,000m race begins at 6 p.m. (CT) and the men's 6,000m race is schedule to begin at 6:45 p.m. (CT).
"We are excited to open the season at Iowa on Friday," said Head Coach Marc Burns. "Racing at Iowa gives the team the opportunity to see this year's Midwest Regional course up close. We will be here in November looking for a performance that will get us to the NCAA Championships. This meet will be a great start for us and we are looking forward to racing the entire team at Vanderbilt on Sept. 17."
On the women's side, two Tigers will make their collegiate debuts on Friday. Freshman Susan Forbis (Lewisville, Texas) and freshman Faramola Shonekan (Columbia, Mo.) will each run in their first race for Mizzou. Sophomore Hannah Thomas (Urbandale, Iowa), who ran in seven races last season including the SEC Championships and the Midwest Regional, will also race on Friday.
Redshirt senior Tyler Schneider (Schaumburg, Ill.) and redshirt senior Drew White (Crystal City, Mo.) led an experienced men's squad into the race on Friday. Among the nine men runners slated to participate in Iowa City, seven are either a junior or senior. White raced in four races in 2015, including an eighth-place finish at the Notre Dame Open Invitational on Oct. 2, 2015.
