The Mizzou junior won his first German national title in the 50m breast
BERLIN – Junior Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany) of the Mizzou swimming team won the 50m breast title Friday at the 2016 German National Championships and Olympic Trials in Berlin. Additionally, junior Nadine Laemmler (Wackersdorf, Bavaria, Germany) placed second in the 50m back finals.
Schwingenschlogl posted a finals time of 27.37 to claim his title and notch the 10th-fastest time in the world this year. Laemmler, who entered the meet ranked 39th out of 57 in the 50m back, clocked a 28.76 in finals to place second overall. Neither the 50m breast or 50m back are Olympic events.
Schwingenschlogl and Laemmler continue competition in Berlin with Olympic sanctioned races Saturday and Sunday. Schwingenschlogl will swim the 100m breast on Saturday and the 200m breast on Sunday, while Laemmler goes in the 200m back on Saturday and the 100m back on Sunday.
The German National Championships are the first part of a two-step process to earn bids to the 2016 Olympic Games. All swimmers who place first or second in an Olympic sanctioned event and notch nomination times in both prelims and finals at the National are eligible for the next step. Those swimmers must then confirm those times at one of four predetermined meets to officially qualify for Rio.
