Johnson, Sublett Nominees for McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award

Candace Johnson and Nick Sublett are the Mizzou's nominees for the H. Boyd McWhorter Post-Graduate Scholarship
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Missouri seniors Candace Johnson (Dallas, Texas) of the soccer team and Nick Sublett (Columbia, Missouri) of the track and field program are nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, as announced by the Southeastern Conference on Thursday (April 21). One male and one female from each of the 14 SEC institutions were nominated for the scholarship, which has been presented to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes by the conference since 1986.
Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC official sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $15,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalsts for the award recieve a $7,500 post-graduate scholarship. The award recipients are chosen by a comittee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Florida, in early June.
Mizzou's female nominee, Johnson will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in Health Science. She is a National Society of Collegiate Scholar and is currently studying abroad in Italy this semester. She was named to the 2015 SEC Soccer Community Service Team and drafted by the Chicago Red Stars in January's National Women's Soccer League College Draft.
On the soccer field, Johnson claimed NSCAA All-South Region second team and All-SEC first team honors in 2015. As a senior this past season, Johnson played every minute and anchored a Tiger defense that set a program record for fewest goals allowed in a season (17) and ranked second all-time in Tiger history in goals against average (0.84), both of which led the Southeastern Conference. On the offensive end, Johnson tallied two goals and two assists for a career high six points. In her four year career, Johnson started 79 of the 80 games she played at center back, while playing every minute of 74 of those matches. She compiled six goals and two assists for 14 points.
Sublett, a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member, will earn a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Missouri in May. A member of the Tiger Leadership Academy the past academic year, he owns a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.312 and is a constant on the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Science Dean's List.
Also an active member of the Columbia community, Sublett has volunteered with the Boone County WELLAWARE Program, Mid-Missouri Food Bank, Race for the Cure, Caleb's Pitch and Mizzou Moves, among others. On the track, he competed in two SEC Outdoor Championship meets for the Tigers.
