Former Tiger called up to the Texas Rangers
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Former Mizzou Baseball standout Brett Nicholas had his contract purchased by Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers on Sunday and is now eligible to make his big league debut. Now that Nicholas, 27, is in the major leagues, that gives Mizzou Baseball four players currently on big league rosters: Max Scherzer (Nationals), Ian Kinsler (Tigers) and Kyle Gibson (Twins). Nicholas is the 10th Mizzou player who was coached by Mizzou's Tim Jamieson to make it to Major League Baseball.
Nicholas has appeared in two games with Round Rock (AAA) this season. The catcher recorded a double for the Express in their 7-3 victory on Opening Day. In 2013 with Frisco (AA), the Phoenix native hit .289 in 136 Double-A games. Nicholas was a Texas League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star, and he led the circuit with 91 RBI in addition to a team-high in home runs. He was named a MiLB.com Organization All-Star following the 2013 season.
At Mizzou, Nicholas played one season in 2010 and hit .352 with 51 runs scored, 15 doubles and 12 homers while driving in a team-high 64 runs, earning All-Big 12 First Team honors. He was drafted in the sixth round of the MLB First Year Player Draft in 2010. He and current Texas Ranger farm hand Nick Tepesch were teammates at Mizzou and have now both played for the Texas Rangers.
