The Tigers left Fayetteville with 16 PR's and nine All-Time Top Ten marks
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Tigers opened up the 2016 outdoor season on Friday (March 25) and Saturday (March 26), traveling to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the Spring Invitational. It was a successful two days for the black and gold, who departed Saturay evening with 16 personal records, and nine All-Time Top Ten marks, including a new school record mark from the women's 4x400m relay squad.
FRIDAY RECAP
The weekend kicked off on Friday night with the men's and women's hammer throw competition, and the debut of freshman Rebecca Keating. Keating narrowly missed landing in the Mizzou All-Time Top Ten for the event, placing second with a top throw of 54.55m (178-11).
In the men's competition, senior Nick Sublett led the Tigers with an eighth-place finish, hitting a new PR mark of 55.36m (181-7). Junior Tanner Buschmann also hit a new PR his first time out this season, tossing 46.83m (153-7).
SATURDAY IN THE FIELD
Field events kicked off the day's events on Saturday, starting with junior Jennifer Berilla in the women's javelin. Berilla just missed her PR in the event with a 41.32m (135-7) performance, earning her fifth in the field.
The men were on the javelin runway next, with junior Reinhard Van Zyl making his debut in the black and gold. Van Zyl and sophomore Alex Pascal led the field from the start, battling between each other for the leading mark. In the end, it was Van Zyl who took first in the field with a top mark of 66.30m (217-6), followed closely by Pascal in second (64.35m // 211-1).
Other highlights from the field include a series of winning efforts in the jumps, starting with freshman Karissa Roman in the high jump. Roman kicked off her first outdoor season with her first winning effort as a Tiger, ending at 1.70m (5-7) for the day.
In the pole vault, freshman Matthew Ludwig was back at the top of the results, winning the competition with a final bar of 5.20m (17-0.75), good for No. 4 on the Mizzou All-Time Top Ten.
Senior Tony Carodine closed out the field events for the Tigers on Saturday night, placing first in the triple jump with a PR jump of 15.77m (51-9). Carodine currently sits at No. 5 on the All-Time Top Ten for the Tigers in the event.
SATURDAY ON THE TRACK
Highlighting the events on the track for the Tigers was the women's 4x400m relay, who took down the school record from 2015 with a winning effort to close out the day. The squad of junior Sandrae Farquharson, junior LaQuisha Jackson, senior Jacqueline Obi, and junior Valerie Thames timed through in 3:38.44 to best the previous top time of 3:40.68 from the 2015 SEC Championships.
That 4x400m performance was one of three Top Ten times for Thames on Saturday, as she reset PR's in both the 100m and 400m hurdles throughout the day. Her 13.70 finish in the 100m hurdles is the fifth-fastest time in school history and earned her sixth in the field. She bounced back from that performance less than two hours later to place third in the 400m hurdles field, running the second-fastest time in Mizzou history – 59.10.
Junior LaQuisha Jackson also earned a new All-Time Top Ten time earlier in the day, taking third in the women's 100m dash with an 11.54 crossing, the third-fastest time in school history.
In the men's 100m dash, it was freshman Kahmari Montgomery who paced the Tigers with an eighth-place finish in 10.57. Next up was sophomore Niager Mathis in 11th overall with a new PR of 10.66, followed by junior Jerrad Mason in 15th (10.73) and sophomore Jonathan Holder in 16th (10.76).
Montgomery returned for the 200m dash, crossing first in the field with the eighth-fastest time in school history – 20.86.
In the distance events, sophomore Valeska Halamicek took to the track for her first 1500m as a Tiger, taking seventh in the seeded section of the women's 1500m run (4:30.66).
Senior Sam Dickerson just missed his PR in the men's seeded section of the 1500m, timing through in 3:49.82 for third.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Tigers, as they travel to Gainesville next week for the Florida Relays (March 31-April 2). For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
