The Tigers now look to the start of the outdoor season later this month
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mizzou Track & Field had one final set of performances on Friday (March 11) to close out the 2016 indoor season, as senior Markesh Woodson and freshman Kahmari Montgomery competed at the NCAA Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.
This marked the third and final indoor championships qualification for Woodson, who qualified for the meet in the 60m dash with a season's best time of 6.59. The school record holder in the event (6.58), Woodson entered the weekend after a second-place finish at the SEC Championships two weeks ago. He closed out the competition in 15th overall with a final time of 6.67.
"Markesh competed amazingly all indoor season. The result wasn't what we wanted, but he competed great," Assistant Coach Carjay Lyles said. "Battling through a mishap during warm-up, and still running as fast as he did speaks to how talented he is. We'll use the next few weeks to get healthy and attack the outdoor season with the same intensity. He's a fighter, and I'm sure of the motivation that will come from today."
Montgomery was next in the blocks, competing for the first time since his stellar SEC Championships performance two weeks ago. The true freshman entered this weekend with not only the conference title in the event, but also one of the top-ten times in the world with his 45.78 school record. He closed his debut collegiate season with an 11th-place finish at the national meet (46.78).
"Kahmari ran well. He just missed it a bit on the execution of what we needed in the race to qualify, but he learned a lot from today and it will set us up well going into the outdoor season," Lyles said. "Competing in his first indoor season and having these kinds of results bodes well for Mizzou in the coming months and years. I'm very proud of Kahmari and the way he's adapted and handled himself this far, I couldn't have asked for a better indoor season from him."
Both Tigers now look forward to the outdoor season, which is scheduled to start on Saturday, March 26, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with the Arkansas Spring Invitational. For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
