LINCOLN, Neb. – The men and women of Mizzou Track & Field closed out the second and final day of the Husker Invitational on Saturday (February 6) with a series of personal record performances and three All-Time Top Ten performances, including the second-fastest women's 4x400m time in Mizzou history. All in all, the Tigers tallied 15 new PR between the two days of competition, as the team makes the turn into the final stretch of the indoor season.
The Tigers wasted little time establishing the day's momentum, as a pair of PR performances kicked off the afternoon's competition. First up was freshman Maya Cody, who continued her climb through the 200m dash record board with a 24.56 finish, good for third in the field and the No. 3 slot in Mizzou's All-Time Top Ten.
In the field events, freshmen Avery Carter and Will Fife were first to get a taste of competition in the men's shot put. Carter landed two consecutive PR marks during the preliminary flight, finish 20th in the field with a best toss of 15.42m (50-7.25).
Freshman Karissa Roman also tallied a PR in the field events, hitting a new top bar of 1.63m (5-4.25) in the high jump.
The women's mile was next up on the track, where juniors Teylar Adelsberger and Bailey Hession both bested their PRs to finish in the top ten of the field. Adelsberger led the way with her first place finish, crossing five-seconds under her previous best in 4:55.19. Hession's 5:05.99 PR crossing earned her ninth overall in the field.
The men's and women's 800m runs were also PR-laden for the black and gold, with all three Tiger competitors earning top marks. The women were up first, where sophomore Valeska Halamicek led the field in 2:10.75, four-seconds under her previous top time. Not far behind was senior Liz Reida, whose 2:13.54 PR earned her a fourth-place finish.
On the men's side, junior Cain Winebrenner took fourth in the field in 1:51.87.
The Tigers' dominance in the mid-distance and distance events continued into the 3000m run, where sophomore Nicole Mello was first across the line for the women's competition in 10:02.06.
In the men's race, senior Jordan Cook crossed in fifth overall with a 8:28.55 PR finish.
Sophomore Karissa Schweizer also highlighted the 3000m run, finishing second overall, first for the collegiate, in the elite section. Her 9:17.98 finish was not only good for a new PR, improving upon her No. 4 position in the All-Time Top Ten list, but also shot her up through the national rankings as the tenth-fastest time in the NCAA thus far this season.
In the men's elite 3000m, senior Dan Roe finished just off his PR in 8:17.58 for seventh overall, followed by sophomore Ollie Lockley in 16th.
Moving back down to the sprints, junior LaQuisha Jackson returned to the blocks for the 60m dash final, where she crossed in 7.52 for sixth in the field. Jackson was also featured in the elite section of the 200m dash, where she once again earned a sixth-place crossing (23.98).
Senior Markesh Woodson had his first 200m dash competition of the season on Saturday, and finished eighth in the elite section (21.54).
Closing out the weekend's competition was a pair of exciting 4x400m competitions, as the Tigers continue re-writing the history books in the sprint events. First up was the women's squad, made up of senior Adewole, junior Valerie Thames, junior LaQuisha Jackson, and senior Sandrae Farquharson. The group already owns the outdoor school record in the event (3:40.68), and narrowly missed adding the indoor record to their names after placing first on Saturday in 3:40.27. The current record of 3:40.20 has been held by Felecia Allen, Teri LeBlanc, Val Sauer, and Natasha Kaiser-Brown since 1989.
The men's 4x400m is also looking to make some changes to the current record books, and was just shy of adding their names to the prestigious list with their 3:13.47 third-place performance. The squad of Jerrad Mason, Charles Graham, Jr., Kahmari Montgomery, and Niager Mathis were in a tight battle with the leaders throughout, but it was Montgomery's sub-47 split that propelled the team to their podium finish.
The Tigers are set to face yet another elite field at the prestigious Tyson Invitational next week (February 12-13) in Fayetteville, Ark. For the latest news on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
