COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Baseball freshman OF Connor Brumfield (Columbia, Mo.) was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday after guiding Mizzou to a perfect 5-0 record last week in Florida. Brumfield led Mizzou in batting (.476), on-base percentage (.577), slugging (.619), RBI (10), doubles (three) and total bases (13) while going 7-for-10 with runners in scoring position and driving in three game-winning RBIs.
Brumfield is the first Mizzou player to win an SEC weekly award this season and it is the first honor of his career from the SEC. He is also the first Mizzou position player to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors since C Brett Bond did so on May 4 of last season.
The Columbia, Mo., native was sensational last weekend for Tim Jamieson's club. He tallied game-winning RBIs in three of Mizzou's five games on the week, including two in one-run contests (Wednesday at FIU and Sunday with his walk-off single in the 10th). Brumfield was instrumental in Mizzou's 5-0 week, the first five-game winning streak since March 10-17 of 2015. He also tilled three multiple-RBI games and three multiple-hit games, leading the team in both categories as well. He did all of that while hitting in the leadoff spot for all five games on the week.
The biggest moment of his week came Sunday when he fired a game-winning, walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th inning on a 3-2 fastball to give Mizzou a 3-2 win over Hofstra, completing Mizzou's first four-game sweep since Feb. 14 of last season vs. Iona. Brumfield hit safely in all five Mizzou games last week.
Brumfield and the rest of the Tigers are back in Missouri and are set for the home opener on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Taylor Stadium. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+ and Tex Little and Trevor Coleman will have the call on KTGR 103.1 FM/1580 AM.
