Future Tigers excelling athletically and academically
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Last November, Mizzou Volleyball announced the addition of two future student-athletes. Kayla Caffey (Chicago, Ill.) and Andie Hanus (Omaha, Neb.) will join the program this summer and be eligible to play for the 2016 season.
Throughout the offseason, Mizzou Athletics will give Tiger fans an update on Caffey and Hanus' happenings on-and-off the court.
Caffey is currently competing with the 18 National Michio Chicago Volleyball Academy and the team has enjoyed outstanding success on the court. At the Mizuno SPVB President's Day Challenge (Feb. 12-15), Caffey led her team to a third place finish at the tournament.
The 18 National Michio Academy competed amongst premier teams across the United States and Canada.
"We started off stronger than ever this 18s season and were commonly referred as the 'best team Michio Chicago Volleyball Academy has ever had' winning nearly all of our matches prior to the Chicago qualifier," Caffey said. "We had some injuries and lost some key players but this past weekend at the Mizuno SPVB Challenge I think it marked a turning moment for our team as we took third place."
"In my preparation for joining Mizzou this summer, I've been exploring positions other than middle blocker and I've worked out every day after school to try to be in the best physical shape possible."
Hanus earned a top-flight academic honor on Feb. 7 as she was recognized as a 2015 First Team PrepVolleyball.com Academic All-American. The Omaha, Neb., native was only one of eight Class of 2016 volleyball athletes to garner First Team honors.
"I'm just extremely grateful to be honored amongst such a great group of talented individuals," Hanus said. "My high school has done an amazing job setting me up for success academically and I hope to carry that into college at the University of Missouri."
On the court, Hanus and the 18 Premier Volleyball Club claimed first place honors at the Asics President's Day Classic (Feb. 12-15).
"The tournament win was extra special because it was a team effort across the board," Hanus said. "We were definitely the underdogs coming in and I'm so proud of the resiliency and fight we showed over the weekend."
