The Tigers closed the two-day Tyson Invite with 12 personal records
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Tigers closed out the Tyson Invitational on Saturday (February 13) in record-style, as the women's 4x400m relay team cruised through the 26-year-old school record in 3:37.67. As the Tigers load the bus for Columbia they bring with them 12 new personal records, five All-Time Top Ten marks, and a lot of excitement as the team approaches the championship portion of the season.
A RECORD DETHRONED
The women's 4x400m relay cruised through the 26-year-old school record to close out events on Saturday. Their 3:37.67 finish, good for second in the field, dropped three-seconds off of the 1989 record of 3:40.20, held by Felecia Allen, Teri LeBlanc, Val Sauer, and Natasha Kaiser-Brown. Freshman Maya Cody popped off with the first leg, and handed off to junior Valerie Thames in third-place who, despite a brief stumble in the first 15-meters, moved into second before passing the baton to junior LaQuisha Jackson. Senior Sandrae Farquharson anchored the team, and ran out of track just before passing up Baylor, closing in second overall.
Of the four women, two also hold the outdoor 4x400m record, as Thames and Jackson were both members of the SEC team who crossed in 3:40.68 during the 2015 outdoor championship meet.
MONTGOMERY'S REDEMPTION
Freshman Kahmari Montgomery returned to the track on Saturday after his 400m dash DQ on Friday, the result of a lane violation in the first 200m. The young sprinter left little doubt as to what's in store down the line, obliterating his previous 200m best with a 21.15 finish. Montgomery entered the meet with a best time of 21.97 from earlier in the season, and now owns the second-fastest mark in school history, just behind senior Markesh Woodson's 21.13 record.
SCHWEIZER STARING DOWN MILE RECORD
Sophomore Karissa Schweizer, along with junior Teylar Adelsberger, were the two lone Tigers to travel north this weekend, joining the elite mid-distance and distance fields at the Iowa State Classic. While Adelsberger was featured in Friday's 3000m competition (9:41.04), Schweizer took to the track for the mile on Saturday. She entered the weekend with a new PR in the event already under her belt, after hitting 4:42.15 at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet, and managed to knock a few more seconds off that time with a third-place crossing of 4:39.87. Schweizer now sits just behind Laura Roxberg's 4:34.59 school record from 2013.
AN UNDEFEATED SEASON
Freshman Jamie Kempfer has risen to every challenge set before her this season, now earning her fourth consecutive event win after a PR performance in the 3000m run. Taking control of the race from the gun, Kempfer steadily gapped the rest of the field, eventually crossing in 9:43.81, 25-seconds below her PR from earlier this season (10:08.25).
Joining her on the line was sophomore Ellyn Atkinson, who also crossed with a new PR, finishing in 10:08.92 for seventh in the field.
SHIFTS IN THE SEC RANKINGS
- Woodson, who was runner-up at the 2015 Indoor SEC Championships in the 60m dash (6.58), now ranks second in the conference after running a season's best 6.59 on Friday.
- Schweizer's 4:39.87 PR in the mile at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday puts her at No. 3 in the current conference rankings, only one second off of the current leader, Marta Freitas of Mississippi State. Schweizer leads the conference for the 3000m with her PR of 9:17.98 from the Husker Invitational.
SHIFTS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Woodson now moves into the No. 5 spot in the NCAA rankings in the 60m dash, after timing through in 6.59 during the semi-final round of the 60m dash.
- Montgomery now ranks 26th in the NCAA with his 21.15 PR in the 200m dash.
- Jackson also moved into the top-30 in the nation for the women's 200m, after earning a season's best 23.61 finish on Saturday.
- Schweizer's 4:39.87 is the 26th-fastest time this season in the NCAA for the women's mile. She is already ranked 16th in the country for the 3000m (9:17.98).
HEAR FROM COACH BRETT HALTER…
Obviously today was really exciting, and we finished on a really high note with the relays. We're really proud and excited for the women, taking down that 4x400m record. That's an old one, it's been around for a long time and some of the greatest women in the history of our program were on that 1989 relay. Across the board, again, the Tigers showed some great competitive integrity, they fought hard in all the events from start to finish, and we really had a lot going on today, so it was exciting to see everyone engaged in a big part of a terrific track meet. The team is in the exact position that we want to be in as we move, now, into the post-season preparations.
Mizzou Track & Field will close the regular season on Friday, February 19, at home with the Collegiate Challenge, before returning to Fayetteville for the SEC Championships (February 26-27). For the latest on your Tigers, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
