BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mizzou Volleyball senior Emily Thater (Springfield, Mo.) was one of 13 student-athletes named to the 2016 Southeastern Conference Volleyball Community Service Team, as announced Wednesday (Nov. 30) by the league office.
The SEC Community Service Team highlights a student-athlete from each institution who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
Joining Thater on the 14th annual Women's Volleyball Community Service Team are Brittany Thomas (Alabama), Breana Jones (Arkansas), Stephanie Campbell (Auburn), Shainah Joseph (Florida), Elle McCord (Georgia), Darian Mack (Kentucky), Kelly Quinn (LSU), Aubrey Edie (Ole Miss), Khris Carr (Mississippi State), Megan Kirkland (South Carolina), Claudia Coco (Tennessee) and Jazzmin Babers (Texas A&M).
Thater has volunteered for numerous events during her collegiate career at Mizzou, accumulating nearly 70 hours of community service since 2013. She served as a NSAD Special Olympic Buddy, while also volunteering at the Children's Hospital Street Party, Benton Elementary Summer School and Going Bonkers events.
The Tiger middle blocker has also participated in the Girl Scout Volleyball Clinic, Black and Gold Youth Clinic and the Mizzou Volleyball Youth League Open Houses. Thater went above and beyond the call this past summer, surprising a young Tiger fan at their birthday party nearly two hours away from Columbia, Mo.
She has shined internally with Mizzou Athletics' sponsored groups, including working at the athletic department's Back to School BBQ, the Tiger Scholarship Fund (TSF) Thank-A-Thon and the department's Women 4 Women events.
Thater is regularly recognized as one of the Tigers' top community service participants and leaders on the court. She owns a 3.2 cumulative GPA in the nationally regarded University of Missouri School of Journalism.
