Coach Odom, players met the media Monday
Mizzou Football met with the media on Monday to preview Saturday's game at South Carolina, which will air live on the SEC Network at 3 p.m. (CT). Before his press conference, Coach Odom brought senior LB Michael Scherer to the podium and thanked him publicly for his contributions to the program in front of the media. It was a touching moment for Scherer, who suffered a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago. Scherer then surprised the media during player availability and talked in depth about what his last two weeks have been like.
Coach Odom touched on several topics Monday, including the status of senior LB Donavin Newsom, who suffered a quad injury last Saturday, and the evolving leadership of Mizzou's underclassmen. Below is a brief transcript and some of the top tweets from Monday's press conference. Also, check out Coach Odom's comments about Scherer, courtesy of St. Louis Post Dispatch write Dave Matter, who had a front row seat.

On Donavin Newsom's status for Saturday…
He had testing done Sunday and then a little bit more yesterday, he didn't practice last night. Still very sore. With Donavin, as much experience as he has at the spot that we are asking him to play, the other day some of the things we built in when he went down that is about four different spots. I am hoping we can get him back and just play base defense with him and maybe do a couple other things, but we'll really have a clear picture Thursday. Again, he is going to go through everything and be able to practice a little bit tomorrow and again, a lot of difference in being able to function and limited practice and then actually go play. I am not worried about his mental capacity to pick up on the game plan and what we are doing this week. I won't be worried about that area in studying video and being prepared and just physically being good. That is one thing about Donavin, he has never been a real vocal guy and Saturday night he was very vocal and it means so much to him. He realizes and to think, a lot of those guys do, that there is not much time left in their senior year and yesterday we spent a lot of time in the training room and today trying to get back and ready to go.
On the development of young leadership in the locker room…
Offensively we are playing one senior and two sometimes. Early on in this year, back in the two-a-days I decided not to just make four captains. We needed as many guys as we can get leadership experience. Whether a freshman sophomore, whatever your classification is, I needed those guys and we are still working on it. It has been a daily process on getting those guys to lead and lead the right way. We can stand there all day and say we need to lead but we've got to show them how to lead and that is important for us to do for the development and moving this program forward. We need as many guys as we can get. We started with the freshman class; we started meeting and teaching and talking leadership training and it is like another class for them. I think it is so important for those guys to get into the program after the recruiting process.

ODOM: Early on, offense didn't play very well. We have to run the ball to be effective. The times we've had success, we've run the ball.

ODOM: There's a lot of people who want Mizzou Football to be good, and I understand that. I don't take losses very well, and I won't ever.

ODOM: Our young guys need to lead by example. Not going to assume they just know how to lead. Have to show them what it looks like.

ODOM: Newsom probable for Saturday; we had about four different spots of his to fill based on scheme.
