Kessinger tallies 4-for-5 effort with 2 HR in game two
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Softball continued 2016 Fall Ball action on Friday afternoon, sweeping Highland Community College in a doubleheader at University Field. The Tigers claimed game one, 7-0, and concluded their strong day with a game two 16-2 victory.
Game #1
In game one of the doubleheader, the Tigers used three-run first inning and fourth inning efforts to garner a commanding lead. Mizzou's offense was led by sophomore Rylee Pierce (Visalia, Calif.), as she recorded a home run and two runs scored.
Redshirt junior Anna Reed (Londell, Mo.) produced a game-high three hit effort, including a leadoff triple in the fourth inning. Freshman Braxton Burnside (Paragould, Ark.) and senior Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.) joined Reed with multi-hit outings.
Senior Cheyenne Baxter (Norborne, Mo.) and redshirt sophomore Madi Norman (Tipton, Mo.) combined for the Tigers' third consecutive fall shutout in the circle. Baxter earned the win, tossing 4.0 shutout innings with two strikeouts. Norman's 3.0 scoreless relief innings with team-high four strikeouts concluded Mizzou's impressive pitching effort.
Game #2
After a solid offensive showing in game one, Mizzou took another step forward in game two with 16 runs on 17 hits. The Tigers' fantastic attack was led by freshman Cayla Kessinger (Saugus, Calif.), as she went 4-for-5 with two home runs, one double, four runs scored and three RBI.
Similar to Kessinger, fellow freshman Burnside recorded her first fall home run of the season with a two-run blast in the third inning. Overall, Burnside went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one double, one home run and two RBI in game two of the twin billing.
Pierce, Norman and sophomore Cosette Tomita (Oak Forest, Ill.) rounded out Mizzou's multi-hit efforts at the plate.
In the circle, sophomore Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) pitched 4.0 perfect innings, retiring all 12 batters she faced. Freshman Parker Conrad (Winter Park, Fla.) earned the save with 3.0 innings of relief work. Conrad posted a team-high five strikeouts over her solid outing.
Up Next
Mizzou continues its 2016 Fall Schedule with another doubleheader on Friday, Oct. 21. The Tigers will host Central Methodist at 4 p.m. (CT), followed by a 6 p.m. (CT) contest against Crowder College.
