COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Track & Field's Jamie Kempfer has become the Tigers' third SEC Freshman of the Week honoree for 2016, as released by the conference office on Tuesday (January 26). The recognition comes after Kempfer's back-to-back winning efforts kicked off her first indoor season in the black and gold. She joins fellow-freshmen Maya Cody and Matthew Ludwig as the first three weekly conference award recipients of the 2016 campaign.
Kempfer started the season with the rest of the team at the Border Battle in Champaign, Ill. (January 9), where she led the field in the 3000m run (10:08.25). She took a weekend off before returning to the track, moving up to the 5000m run at the prestigious Rod McCravy Memorial Meet in Lexington, Ky. (January 22). There, Kempfer once again led the way, earning her second consecutive win in the event with a 7:11.87 finish.
Kempfer currently ranks third overall in the SEC for the 5000m, leading the freshman class, and is the third-fastest freshman in NCAA for the event.
The Tigers are off this weekend before hitting the road for the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. (February 5-6). For the latest on Mizzou Track & Field, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MIZ_TrackField.
