COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Department of Athletics would like to extend its condolences to the family of Jane Faurot Hazell, who passed away on Aug. 22 at her home. Jane is the daughter of legendary Mizzou head football coach Don Faurot, whose name adorns the field at Memorial Stadium.
Jane was a 1955 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism where she was a proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She later served as a board member for the sorority in her adult years. Jane was a proud teacher as well, working in education at all levels while living in Louisiana and Colorado before returning to Columbia permanently in 1987. She was a two-term member of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Columbia. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church.
A college football icon, Faurot was the Mizzou head coach from 1935-42 and 1946-67 and is second all-time in program history with his 101 wins, trailing only current head coach Gary Pinkel. Faurot is in the National Football Foundation's Hall of Fame, the Mizzou Athletics Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He also served as president of the American Football Coaches Association and is credited with creating the Split-T formation. Additionally, he was credited with the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award for his distinguished service in the advancement of the best interests of football.
The field at Mizzou's Memorial Stadium was officially honored with his namesake in 1972.
