COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tuesday morning at #MIZCamp behind the Mizzou Athletics Training Complex (MATC) featured a seesaw battle between an aggressive defense and a patient offense. The defense paired consistent pressure up front with physicality in the secondary throughout practice. On offense, timely third down conversions and a flurry of deep passes in a controlled fourth quarter highlighted an effective day. Below are some highlights from the 12th practice of fall camp:
- DL Terry Beckner, Jr. shined during 1-on-1trench drills, flashing a slew of nifty moves including a spin and a strafe to burst into the backfield and sack the dummy QB.
- OL Paul Adams also excelled in 1-on-1drills, using strong hands and good footwork to prevent the opposing defender from touching the dummy QB.
- With the score (using a coaches' point system) tied at 30-30 during a 7-on-7 segment, TE Sean Culkin hauled in a great catch in traffic for a first down, but back-to-back forced incompletions by the defense gave defensive coordinator Barry Odom's group a close 35-32 victory.
- During an 11-on-11 scrimmage, the defense got off to a solid start as DE Spencer Williams and DE Walter Brady snuffed out consecutive runs for a pair of tackles-for-loss.
- QB Maty Mauk responded, feeling pressure and stepping up in the pocket to deliver a 25-yard strike to WR Wesley Leftwich, who scampered down the sideline to pick up a big gain on third down. Mauk and Leftwich connected again two plays later for a 15-yard reception.
- LB Kentrell Brothers made an impressive interception near the sideline, dashing in front of a pass before picking the ball off and planting a foot in bounds.
- QB Drew Lock heaved a 65-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman, WR Justin Smith. Smith elevated for the catch and broke free to the end zone for the score.
- S T.J. Warren delivered a couple jarring hits on short third down situations, tossing the ball carriers out of bounds before they reached the sticks.
- Beckner Jr. steamrolled his momentum from 1-on-1s to the 11-on-11 scrimmage. He knifed his way into the backfield on several occasions, including a hurry that prevented a first down.
- LB Donavin Newsom recorded a sack, chasing down QB Eddie Printz before he could throw it away. Newsom also forced a fumble with a punch-out later in the segment, but the ball bounced out of bounds before the defense could pounce on it.
- In a 4th quarter situation, Mauk caught fire and moved the offense down the field on an impressive hurry-up drive. On third and long, Mauk rolled to his left and threw across his body to a streaking DeSean Blair, who hauled in the reception among a group of defenders.
- Mauk then connected with WR Nate Brown on back-to-back plays. Following a completion to Brown under duress for 15 yards, Mauk dropped a dime to the speedy slot receiver for 20 yards to win the session.
- At the conclusion of practice, it was announced that the team would be attending a movie together. When Fantastic Four and The Gift were mentioned, resulting in crickets from the team, the coaches then threw out Straight Outta Compton as an option and the resulting roar could be heard from Jesse Hall.
