Mizzou Drops Finale to Milwaukee, 3-1

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Zach Lavy (Auxvasse, Mo.) launched his first Division I homer and Peter Fairbanks (St. Louis, Mo.) allowed just one earned run over 6.0 innings while striking out five, but the bats again were quiet as Mizzou fell to Milwaukee, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon (March 8) at Taylor Stadium. The loss drops the Tigers to 10-4 on the season while Milwaukee improves to 8-3.
Lavy drove in the Tigers' lone run while Logan Pearson (Bentonville, Ark.) tallied his second consecutive multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 after posting three hits on Saturday.
Milwaukee got on the board in the top of the first inning as a leadoff error by Brett Peel (St. Charles, Mo.) came around to score on a double-play ball following a perfectly executed hit-and-run. Fairbanks then struck out clean-up hitter Sam Koenig to get the game to the bottom half of the inning. After Mizzou went in order in the bottom of the first, Fairbanks came out and put together a 1-2-3 inning in the second.
Unfortunately, every blank frame thrown up by Fairbanks was matched by Milwaukee starter Joe Pavlovich as he held Mizzou without a hit until two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Pearson legged out an infield hit. But that led to nothing for the Tigers. Milwaukee then added another run in the top of the sixth on a one-out sacrifice fly.
Mizzou threatened in the bottom of the sixth as Peel and Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) drew back-to-back, one-out walks and promptly pulled off the double steal to put runners on second and third. But Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) flew out to shallow right and Josh Lester (Columbus, Ga.) struck out looking to end the threat.
Fairbanks' day was done as Breckin Williams (Oronogo, Mo.) relieved him in the top of the seventh. He allowed a leadoff double and that runner eventually came around to score on a two-out single by Nick Unes to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Lavy then launched his first Division I homer to lead off the seventh inning to put the Tigers on the board. Mizzou then got a one-out hit from Pearson, his second of the day, but Jake Ivory (St. Charles, Mo.) hit into a 1-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Williams went back out for the eighth inning and worked around a two-out walk, keeping Mizzou within striking distance with two outs remaining. Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) led off the eighth with a hit and was pinch-ran for with Case Munson (St. Charles, Mo.). Munson was thrown out at second trying to take an extra base on a ball in the dirt and the next two batters went in order, sending the game to the ninth.
Austin Tribby (Springfield, Mo.) worked a shutout ninth to give Mizzou a chance in the ninth, but the Tiger bats could not make anything happen.
Mizzou will be back in action Tuesday when it takes on Truman State at Taylor Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. For all the latest on Mizzou baseball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MizzouBaseball.
