ATHENS, Ga. - Mizzou got seven shutout innings from junior righty Peter Fairbanks (St. Louis, Mo.) as the Tigers completed a three-game sweep of Georgia with a 6-0 win on Sunday afternoon (March 15) at Foley Field. The win improves the Tigers to 15-4 on the year and 3-0 in SEC play. The sweep is the first ever SEC sweep for the Tigers and the team's first road conference sweep since 2009 at Nebraska. Mizzou has now won five in a row and the 6-0 win was also Mizzou's fourth shutout of the season.
Fairbanks was sensational on Sunday, allowing just one hit and three walks over 7.0 shutout innings to earn his second win of the season. The offense was sparked by a big two-run double by sophomore Jake Ring (Ingleside, Ill.) in the third inning as he has reached base safely in all 19 games this season. Freshmen Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) and Trey Harris (Powder Spring, Ga.) each tallied two hits in the win as well.
Just as the Tigers did in Saturday's doubleheader, they struck for runs in the third inning, this time on a two-out double by Ring to deep centerfield, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. That also knocked Georgia starter David Sosebee out of the game with an apparent injury. Mizzou then added three more runs in the fourth inning, the first coming on an RBI bunt single by Harris. The next came on a Case Munson (St. Charles, Mo.) sacrifice fly and another on a wild pitch as Mizzou carried a 5-0 lead through 3.5.
Fairbanks responded to the run support with a four-pitch inning in the bottom of the fourth and continued to deal from there. He did not allow a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning, but after allowing a steal he picked off that runner at second base to put together a patch-work 1-2-3 inning to send the game to the sixth.
Mizzou added another run in top of the seventh as Ryan Howard (St. Charles, Mo.) legged out an infield single, forcing a wide throw at first from Georgia SS Nick King, allowing Brett Peel (St. Charles, Mo.) to score from second base.
Fairbanks then, on his 99th pitch, picked up his sixth strikeout in the bottom of the seventh. He was relieved after a stellar outing, allowing just one hit over 7.0 shutout innings. That made way for Andrew Schwaab (St. Charles, Mo.) who worked around a two-out hit and hit batter in the eighth. Schwaab then came back out for the ninth and retired the Bulldogs in order.
Mizzou will be back home Tuesday and Wednesday for a two-game, midweek series against Air Force at Taylor Stadium. For all the latest on Mizzou baseball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on twitter @MizzouBaseball.
