COLUMBIA, Mo. - Brett Peel (St. Charles, Mo.), Josh Lester (Columbus, Ga.) and Chris Akmon (Scottsdale, Ariz.) all had two RBI as Mizzou (12-4) bested SIU-Edwardsville by a 9-4 final on Wednesday night (March 11) at Taylor Stadium. Peel also scored once and stole two bases, tying him for the SEC lead with 12. He also extended his on-base streak to 14 games.
Brett Bond (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied two hits and scored three times in the contest, leading the team in runs scored. Akmon and Logan Pearson (Bentonville, Ark.) also scored twice in the contest. The victory capped off a two-game midweek set in which the Tigers scored 19 runs in two games, their highest total since March of 2012 where they hit double digits in each game of a pair against North Dakota.
The Tigers struck for three runs in the third inning, all unearned runs, as the home squad took advantage of a throwing error from SIU-Edwardsville's pitcher and then a Peel double to score two more runs. The Cougars got a run back in the fourth, scoring on an infield single after Rash almost escaped a two-on, no-out jam, making the score 3-1 through three and a half.
Akmon added on to the lead in the bottom of the frame, shooting a double to the corner in left to score Bond and Pearson for a 5-1 lead. Lester made it a six-run game with a two-RBI single to right, scoring Akmon and Peel for a 7-1 lead through four.
The lead was quickly reduced to three, though, as Andrew Schwaab (St. Charles, Mo.) was charged with two runs in the inning after taking over for Rash who walked the leadoff batter. Just like an inning earlier, the Tigers responded with runs of their own, this time scoring twice with a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Trey Harris (Powder Springs, Ga.) to take a 9-4 lead after five innings.
After two scoreless frames, Bryce Montes De Oca (Lawrence, Ks.) appeared on the mound for the second consecutive night, tossing two scoreless frames to seal the 9-4 win for the Tigers.
The Tigers head to Athens, Ga. to open conference play against the Georgia Bulldogs this weekend but will return home on Tuesday (March 17) to take on Air Force. For all the latest on Mizzou baseball, follow the team on Twitter (@MizzouBaseball) or check in to MUTigers.com.
