Columbia, Mo - Mizzou Men's Basketball fought hard against the Aggies, but let the game slip away down the stretch as Texas A&M won 83-61 on Saturday evening at Mizzou Arena. Sophomore guard Wes Clark led the way for Mizzou with a team-high 15 points and dished out six assists as the Tigers fell to 7-16 (1-9) on the season.
Clark has stepped up his game in conference play, as he is averaging a team-best 11.8 points per game against SEC opponents. The quick guard has now scored at least 15 points in three of his past six games. He also continued getting his teammates involved, tying his second-best outing this season in terms of assists.
In the first four minutes of the game, Keanau Post (eight points, five rebounds) made his presence felt down low by scoring four points and snatching four boards. Mizzou's big man is continuing to prove his worth with an increased role as a starter.
The Tigers kept it close throughout the first half and only trailed by seven going into halftime. Clark already had 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Early in the second half, Mizzou remained within striking distance thanks to a boost from Jakeenan Gant. The freshman forward scored six points on 3-of-3 shooting in the second, including two big dunks. He finished with 10 points--the most he has scored since his season debut against Xavier on December 13.
Efficient free throw shooting helped Mizzou early in the second as the Tigers shot 11-for-12 (91.7 percent) from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. They shot 16-for-19 (84.2 percent) for the game.
After Gant's second dunk midway through the second half, the Tigers trailed 53-44. However, the Aggies' hot shooting allowed them to extend their lead back to double-digits and continue to do so the rest of the way. Texas A&M shot a blistering 70.4 percent from the field in the second half.
The Tigers now head to South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks this Tuesday, February 10. Tip off on SEC Network in Columbia, S.C., is slated for 6:00 p.m. CT. For all the latest on Mizzou men's basketball, stay tuned to MUTigers.com and follow the team on Twitter @MizzouHoops.
