Munlyn earns second conference award, Ethridge snatches first career award
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman middle blocker Alyssa Munlyn (Suwanee, Ga.) and junior libero Alexa Ethridge (Lee's Summit, Mo.) were honored by the Southeastern Conference league office Monday morning. Munlyn earned her second Freshman of the Week honor this season while Ethridge claimed her first career Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
Munlyn recorded 17 kills on .516 hitting with seven total blocks against Georgia and No. 18 Kentucky this past weekend. Ethridge tallied 36 digs (4.50 per set), eight assists and three service aces for the Tigers.
Last Friday versus the Bulldogs, Munlyn tallied nine kills on a career-high .727 hitting percentage. Two days later against the Wildcats, the Suwanee, Ga., native posted eight kills on .400 hitting and five total blocks.
Following her two efficient hitting matches, Munlyn has hit over .400 in a match 11 times this season for Mizzou. This season, Munlyn is only one of two freshmen in the SEC (joining Tennessee's Erica Treiber) to place in the top-10 in both hitting percentage (.362) and blocks per set (1.01). Additionally, her 117 total blocks ranks fifth-best in the SEC.
Munlyn has taken her game to another level since SEC play began, totaling 115 kills on .423 hitting with 64 total blocks (1.14 per set). Her .423 hitting percentage in SEC only matches is tied for third-best in the conference while her 1.14 blocks per set ranks eighth-highest.
Ethridge was a mainstay in the back row for Mizzou as her 36 digs were the most in the SEC this past week. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native was a valuable member for the Tigers as her 4.50 digs per set, 1.00 assists per set and 0.38 service aces per set all placed above her season averages.
Ethridge's 17 digs vs. Georgia and 19 digs at No. 18 Kentucky led Mizzou in the category in each match. She has paced the Tigers in digs in 22 of 27 matches this season.
Mizzou (23-4, 11-3 SEC) continues its final road stretch of the season with two away matches this week. The Tigers travel to Arkansas on Wednesday, Nov. 18, followed by a visit to Ole Miss on Sunday, Nov. 22.
First serve in Fayetteville, Ark., is set for 5 p.m. (CT) while action is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. (CT) in Oxford, Miss.
