COLUMBIA, Mo. – Team Black won its third consecutive game, 6-1, to begin the 2015 Mizzou Baseball Fall World Series on Friday night (Oct. 9) at Taylor Stadium. Black Team got a good start from Freshman All-American Tanner Houck and a four-run second inning led Black to a win.
Grey got to Houck early with a rally sparked by consecutive singles from Ryan Howard and Johnny Balsamo to open the frame bottom of the first. Grey eventually took the lead on an RBI infield single by Zack Lavy. But Black got the run back in the top of the second as Trey Harris hit a leadoff triple to right center to get things going. He was singled in by Matt Feldt and that sparked a four-run, five-hit inning to give Black a 4-1 lead. Three of the four runs were scored with two outs.
Houck came back to the mound in the second and worked around a bloop hit to lead off the frame by Chris Akmon. Houck was good until a pair of two-out walks in the third put two men on and ended his day but his bullpen got him out of the jam, preserving his 4-1 lead.
Black plated two more runs in the top of the fourth, one on a passed ball and another on a balk, extending the lead to 6-1. Grey again threatened in the fourth, stranding a pair as it left five men on through four innings. Grey reliever. Grey reliever Bryce Montes De Oca came back on for the fifth inning and worked out of some trouble to put up a shutout frame.
Grey stranded its sixth runner in the fifth after Jack Klages drew a leadoff walk but was unable to score. Cole Bartlett tossed a pair of impressive innings to keep Gold close, but Black closed the door for the 6-1 win.
