Mizzou Tennis Suffers 4-1 Defeat at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn - Senior Cierra Gaytan-Leach notched her second win this week over a ranked singles opponent but the Mizzou tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss to Tennessee Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 6-16 overall and 0-8 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Lady Vols improved to 9-9 and 3-5.

For the second straight match, Gaytan-Leach recorded a win over a ranked foe at No. 1 singles action. The senior breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Eve Repic, who entered ranked No. 94 nationally. On Tuesday, Gaytan-Leach knocked off No. 60 Natalie Beazant of Rice. Overall, Gaytan-Leach is 6-1 over her last seven completed matches.

The home squad took a 1-0 advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. At No. 1, Tennessee's No. 75 duo of Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams posted an 8-4 win over Gaytan-Leach and senior Rachel Stuhlmann. The Lady Vols won the point after an 8-4 win for Repic and Laurence Guevremont against sophomore Madison Rhyner and freshman Cassidy Spearman at No. 2 play.

In singles action, Tennessee went up 2-0 after Victoria Olivarez downed Tiger freshman Tracy Dong, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6.

Gaytan-Leach brought Missouri within one, 2-1, with her win at No. 1 singles, but the Lady Vols responded with victories at No. 5 and 4 play to clinch the team win. Tennessee's Brittany Lindl defeated Spearman at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4, while Guevremont posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rhyner at No. 4 singles.

Missouri continues competition on Sunday, March 30 against No. 9 Georgia at Noon CT. The match against the Bulldogs on Sunday is part of UTSA College Matchday and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.
