Head Coach Robin Pingeton
Opening Statement...
"It was not one of our better offensive performances tonight, but I was really proud of the way the girls responded. I thought they came out in the second half and really set the tone. It wasn't pretty, but we found a way to get it done. I thought we got great minutes from Maddie Stock tonight. I thought Bree Fowler had some really good minutes for us and brought us a lot of energy. I thought Jordan did a tremendous job on the boards. You're going to have games like this, and when things aren't going your way offensively, you've got to find a way to get it done on the defensive end, and I thought we did a great job of that tonight."
Deciding to play zone defense...
"You think you're a little crazy just to come up with the idea from the standpoint that we haven't played it a lot in games. I think their strength is transition offense and dribble penetration. They run that wing ball screen to death. Instead of taking the chance of getting caught in foul trouble or letting them attack us when we're switching on those ball screens, we felt like packing it in would be our best option."
Jordan Frericks' improvement...
"It's been amazing to see her grow as a player. She's only a sophomore and she's so explosive on the offensive end. She's off to a great start for us."
On her 400th win...
"I didn't even think about it. I've been very blessed with some amazing assistant coaches and some tremendous players. It goes way beyond the head coach. There's a lot of people involved in those wins."
On Maddie Stock's points off the bench and the depth of the team...
"We needed a lift. To be able to call a number off the bench and have them give you a lift is huge. One of our strengths this year is our depth. We're deeper than we were a year ago."
Sophomore forward Jordan Frericks:
On utilizing the 2-3 zone:
"I think it was something new, so going out we were a little shaky but throughout the game we got more comfortable. I think it was a good game plan of stopping them."
On her steal that led to a 10-0 run:
"I know that definitely brought us some momentum and energy, especially on defense knowing that we can be aggressive and quick. I think that set the momentum for the next couples plays and the rest of the game. Everyone just fed off each other's energy.
On Loyola coach Sheryl Swoopes calling her a "crafty player":
"It's pretty cool, I guess thank you."
Junior guard Maddie Stock:
On how she got into a rhythm:
"I think it was my teammates saying "we need to pick it up." Then everybody else just stepped up by rebounding and getting stops on defense. So just picking up on the energy made me get into a rhythm."
On if she looks for her shot when teammates aren't hitting theirs:
"I wouldn't say I'm looking for my shot, I think I'm more just trying to look for our offense to move; starting to get screens set and just something to happen and then if I have a shot I'll take it."
Redshirt sophomore guard Lindsey Cunningham:
On utilizing the 2-3 zone:
"We sprinkled it in through practice and occasionally in a game but nothing like tonight where we played it the majority of the game. But we do play that a lot come SEC time. I think it was great experience to get it under our belts a little bit and learn to really pack it in and we realize how much that defense can stop those teams that like to get to the hoop."
