COLUMBIA, Mo. - Jordan Frericks (Quincy, Ill.) led the way for Mizzou (5-1) with her second double-double of the year as the Tigers took a 56-45 victory over Loyola (2-4) on Wednesday night (Dec. 3) at Mizzou Arena. Frericks finished the game with 14 points and 15 rebounds. The victory gave coach Robin Pingeton 400 career wins as a head coach.
The Tigers also got big contributions from Maddie Stock (Town and Country, Mo.) and Juanita Robinson (Chicago, Ill.), who posted 12 and 10 points, respectively. Stock's 12 points were a season high, and Robinson's 10 points mark her second double-digit game as a Tiger. A balanced attack featured nine Tigers tallying points in the game and nine grabbing rebounds in the victory.
A defensive struggle to start, the game went into the first media timeout with a score 3-2 in favor of the visitors thanks to a Destiny Washington trey on the game's opening possession. Frericks then put the Tigers on top after the break with her third and fourth points of the game on a layup and Morgan Stock (Town and Country, Mo.) tacked on a three to cap a 7-0 run for the home squad.
Maddie Stock came up big after Loyola cut the Mizzou advantage to 9-7, draining a three to push the edge to five. The Ramblers battled back again to cut the Mizzou lead to 15-13 until Lindsey Cunningham (Columbia, Mo.) drained an uncontested three-pointer from the corner. Loyola responded with a 7-2 run to knot the game at 20 at the under-four media timeout, but the Tigers closed the half strong with a 5-0 run to take a 25-20 lead into the locker room for halftime.
Robinson nailed a three to open the second half, and Frericks tacked on another layup as Mizzou claimed a commanding 30-22 lead two minutes in. It was Robinson, again, coming through with a layup after Loyola cut the lead to four, starting a 10-0 run for the Tigers as they took their first double-digit lead of the game at 40-26.
A pair of free throws pushed Frericks into double-digits for the game and sealed a double-double, and two Maddie Stock treys shortly after gave Mizzou a 51-34 advantage at the under-eight timeout, capping a 21-8 run that spanned 8:36. Loyola battled to make the game closer toward the end, cutting the Mizzou lead to 56-44 with just over 1:30 remaining, but the Ramblers ultimately fell 56-45.
The Tigers head to Bradley on Saturday (Dec. 6) for a game against Bradley before returning home on Monday (Dec. 8) for a contest against St. Louis at 7 p.m. at Mizzou Arena.
