COLUMBIA, Mo. - Despite trailing for nearly the first 36 minutes Tuesday night (Dec. 2) at Mizzou Arena, Mizzou men's basketball rallied late to defeat the visiting Southeast Missouri Redhawks, 65-61. The Tigers second half comeback was keyed by hot shooting from behind the arc, as Mizzou hit 6-of-7 three-pointers in the last 20 minutes of action.
Sophomore Johnathan Williams, III paced all scorers Tuesday with 18 points. The final tally for Williams III marked a new career-high for the Memphis, Tenn., native. He also pulled in 11 boards to post the first double-double by a Tiger this season. Freshman Montaque Gill-Caesar and senior Keith Shamburger also produced solid nights from the field for the Tigers, scoring 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The first half was controlled by the Redhawks from the opening tip. Southeast Missouri led the Tigers throughout the first 20 minutes and held a lead as high as 11 points.
Mizzou received scoring from seven different players in the first half, led by six points from Williams III. Shamburger also turned in a strong half, tallying five points and grabbing two rebounds.
The Redhawks (46-percent) were outshot by the Tigers (50-percent) in the first half, but took advantage of seven Mizzou turnovers en-route to a 30-24 edge at the half. Southeast Missouri opened up the second half strong, and once again extended its lead to double digits. The Tigers responded nicely however and pulled within two points at the under-12:00 timeout. An 8-0 run by Mizzou later led to the game's first tie at 42-42 with 10:38 remaining.
The two teams exchanged mini runs for the next five-plus minutes before Gill-Caesar tied the game again at 54-54 with his second three-pointer of the contest. Nearly 36 minutes into the game, the Tigers gained their first advantage of the night after freshman D'Angelo Allen knocked down a three to put Mizzou up 57-55 at the 3:49 mark. It was his first career make from distance.
Mizzou never looked back after Allen's three and held on for a 65-61 victory against the Redhawks. Tuesday night's win moved the Tigers to 8-0 all-time against Southeast Missouri.
